‘Morphing Textile’ transitions from a flat surface to a 3-dimensional, self-folding,
and partially opening form.

‘Morphing Textile’ is a textile, knitted surface that transitions from a flat surface to a three-dimensional, self-folding, and partially opening form. The entire surface is knitted as a whole, there are no seams.
This project is confidential, therefore it is not possible to show the final and complete result.

Developing ‘Morphing Textile’

At the beginning of the development process, various paper folding techniques were explored to understand how a solid material can be folded and in which directions it expands at specific pressure points.

Following this thorough investigation, a sophisticated folding technique was developed, allowing for the transition from a flat surface to a three-dimensional one that is foldable and expandable without altering its external dimensions.

This well-thought-out design was then translated into a knitting program. After multiple tests on knitting techniques, materials, and parameters such as stitch size and tension, the result could be produced as a single knitted surface using an industrial knitting machine.
